George S. Mahaffey

PROFILE

Mr. Mahaffey is a senior associate with the firm. His current practice concentrates on commercial litigation, securities litigation, wrongful death litigation, professional liability defense, and general insurance defense.


Mr. Mahaffey handles cases primarily before the United States District Courts for Maryland and the District of Columbia , the Circuit Courts of Maryland, the Superior Court for the District of Columbia, as well as mediations around the country. He is responsible for all aspects of case management, including the development of case strategy, selection of expert witnesses, taking and defending of expert and fact witness depositions, and preparation of pleadings and motions. He has obtained summary judgment on behalf of numerous clients and has directed numerous arbitrations, mediations, and assisted in jury trials resulting in defense verdicts.


In addition to his professional experience, Mr. Mahaffey has written numerous articles for a number of prominent law reviews on emerging issues concerning the legal profession.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

SECURITIES

Mr. Mahaffey has represented brokers, registered representatives, and broker-dealers in over two-dozen cases before the National Association of Securities Dealers up through and including final arbitration. These matters involved both common law claims and claims under the federal and state securities laws.

PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY

Mr. Mahaffey has represented professionals in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia, including attorneys, physicians, psychologists, health care organizations, nursing homes, group homes, and real estate developers. Mr. Mahaffey has also written extensively about this area of the law.

INSURANCE COVERAGE LITIGATION

Mr. Mahaffey has represented insurers in various complex insurance coverage litigation arising from asbestos bodily injury and asbestos property damage claims, environmental coverage disputes involving alleged contamination of soil and groundwater from leaking drums buried in the ground, and other disputes involving first and third party coverages, errors and omissions, intentional acts, personal injury and bodily injury claims.

COMMERCIAL AND BUSINESS TORT LITIGATION

Mr. Mahaffey has represented a variety of businesses in complex business tort litigation. Mr. Mahaffey has represented entities in matters concerned with allegations of tortious interference with economic relations and other business torts. Mr. Mahaffey has likewise has handled other cases involving claims of defamation and tortious interference with contractual relations.

WRONGFUL DEATH LITIGATION

Mr. Mahaffey has defended businesses in the District of Columbia and Maryland in various wrongful-death actions.

GENERAL LIABILITY CLAIMS

Mr. Mahaffey has defended numerous insureds in a wide variety of claims arising from auto and truck collisions, premises-related injuries, construction claims, and intentional torts.

PRODUCT LIABILITY LITIGATION

Mr. Mahaffey also has substantial experience in the defense of product liability claims, defending manufacturers of construction equipment and commercial products against claims of negligence, strict liability and breach of warranty.
